HJF is seeking a Patient Educator/Clinical Nurse Specialist to support the Hematology/Oncology inpatient ward at the John P. Murtha Cancer Center (MCC) located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland.  HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MCC.

The John P. Murtha Cancer Center at Walter Reed Bethesda is a modern, patient-centric, tri-service military healthcare facility. Its comprehensive core of military and civilian oncologists and other cancer-trained clinicians and researchers provide multidisciplinary cancer-care delivery and patient-family support services. Our Cancer Center, the only DoD Cancer Center of Excellence within the Military Health System, offers its patients access to cutting-edge cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies.

This is a full-time Oncology patient educator/CNS position in the inpatient ward for Murtha Cancer Center. The incumbent will be available for critical clinical events.  Duties include developing patient education programs, developing and updating patient education utilizing evidence based practice. Educates patients regarding chemotherapy regimens, central lines and radiation treatments to optimize the patient experience. Additionally, provides education to nursing staff and develops ongoing performance improvement projects to enhance the patient experience.

Responsibilities:

  1. Comprehensive hematology/oncology patient education programs within the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC).
  2. Develops learning objectives to meet patient needs and evaluates the effectiveness of the program.
  3. Round with the physician team daily, participating in Interdisciplinary Rounds and then to meet with each patient to assess educational needs and to develop an education plan which is subsequently documented in Essentris, the computerized charting system.
  4. Appropriate educational material will be developed by the incumbent to best meet patient learning needs.
  5. Ensures nursing education and training programs are conducted in accordance with applicable service regulations; current standards of practice, and accredited guidelines.
  6. Prepares educational directives, standard operating procedures, and programs of instruction, as required; assesses new policies, procedures, and practices to determine whether educational programs should be developed to facilitate organizational change; and takes the lead in implementing training at the bedside.
  7. Prepares, maintains, and submits required records and reports.
  8. Serves as an advisor, or a member of, various hospital committees and process action teams, as directed.
  9. Counsels professional and paraprofessional personnel regarding education programs and opportunities.
  10. Provides didactic instruction and tutoring, as needed.
  11. Maintains current knowledge of research in oncology nursing and health care, implementing programs to interpret and apply findings within didactic and clinical educational programs.
  12. Conducts a Journal Club with nursing staff to keep nurses current with up to date evidence based practices.
  13. Updates staff competencies and verifies these competencies at least twice annually.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Professional knowledge of a wide range of healthcare, nursing, and business concepts, principles, and practices to manage specialized hospital hematology/oncology educational programs.
  • Highly advanced ability to plan, develop, administer and communicate patient educational interventions to include all technical, administrative, and professional medical and health educational programs, supporting both military and civilian, professional MTF employees.
  • Thorough knowledge of the interrelatedness of body systems in maintaining and restoring health. Skill in applying educational methods and tools to enhance the knowledge of the healthcare staff, in relation to wellness, disease management, outcomes management, demand management, case management, and acute care, especially hematology/oncology diagnoses.
  • Knowledge and ability to serve as a clinical/educational role model, educator, team collaborator, patient advocate, and prominent staff member in developing improved health care.
  • Skill to recognize proper functioning of educational equipment, such as digital media, DVD (laptop and desktop computer), multimedia digital projectors, and training mannequins. Skill to recognize proper functioning of medical equipment used in training. Ability to develop patient educational tools in written format.
  • Knowledge of professional and military organizations that provide information/ assistance for the development and sustainment of nursing and healthcare educational programs. Skill in interacting with a wide range of contacts to coordinate educational activities for patients and staff.
  • Skills to review and appraise the effectiveness of the education program. Ability to appropriately formulate educational policy to align with the hospital’s mission and vision.
  • Skill in utilizing the internet, and other sources, to research current healthcare literature, educational information, and technological advances in the medical and nursing fields.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with a focus on Education preferred.

Minimum Experience: 2-4 years nursing experience, at least 1 year as an Oncology Nurse Educator.

Physical Capabilities: Work requires extended periods of walking throughout the facility and standing in classroom instruction. Occasional lifting is required in transporting audiovisual aids, and educational equipment. Occasional long periods of kneeling, lifting, and stooping is required in the teaching of competencies.

This is a mandatory drug testing position. This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for appointment to this position will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: Licensed as a Registered Nurse, Oncology Nurse Certified; certified in basic cardiac life support. Incumbent applies a wide range of professional nursing theories, principles, and procedures in providing care to hematology and/or oncology patients. Plans, provides, oversees, administers, and documents professional patient care, in accordance with nursing standards of practice and established policies/procedures. Must have or have the ability to obtain a Maryland License. Must have or have the ability to obtain an American Red Cross BLS.

Work Environment: Incumbent involves everyday exposure to infections, and/or other harmful chemotherapy and radiation agents, hazardous materials, etc. Specific safety and infection control measures may be required; including protective clothing, such as gowns, gloves, masks, hats, shoe covers, and goggles. Exposure to radiation agents is possible, but uncommon; however, exposure to cytotoxic agents is very common and may be an everyday exposure.

Background: US Citizenship required; eligibility to obtain and hold Department of Defense issued Secret Clearance.
